Study on polyethylene-based carbon fibers obtained by sulfonation under hydrostatic pressure

Abstract Polyethylene based carbon fibers were studied using high density polyethylene(HDPE) and linear low polyethylene(LLDPE) with various melt flow index. The draw ratio of the polyethylene sulfonation mechanism investigated under hydrostatic pressures 1 5 bar in first time. influence index types on reaction was studied. Carbon prepared through LLDPE possessing side chains a fibers, which exhibited thermoplastic properties plastic behavior, cross-linked process. Their thermal mechanical changed to thermoset elastic behavior. Although performed pressure bar, it difficult convert highly oriented because their crystallinity, but partially could be converted fibers. Therefore, effect fiber orientation crosslinking, has not been reported previous literature, detail, new method successful thermally stabilizing fiber. Hydrostatic 20 at 130 °C for 2.5 h bar. resulting carbonized following conditions: 1000 °C, °C/min, five minutes. tensile strength 2.03 GPa, modulus 143.63 an elongation break 1.42% prepared.
